First, what is a Twitter list? Well, it is a curated group of Twitter users. When you click the list you will see a stream of Tweets from only the users that are included in that group not ALL the people you follow – making everything simple and tidy – oh how I love a list!
To make a list you need to go to the lists page which is via the profile drop down menu bar, or by going to your profile page and clicking on the LISTS tab. Click create list, enter the name of your list, short description of the list and whether you want the list to be private or public.
The Twitter lists allow you to organise the people you’re following into groups, and they even allow you to include people you’re not following.
Create lists that focus on subjects and people that are relevant for you, e.g. ‘social media’ or ‘marketing’ – you can make these lists public, meaning other people can follow your lists or you can make the lists private so only you can track and see them. For example you could put your family into one list, making this private to you.
Here is a great example of one agency that has put together a film UK list that has been made public by Strike Media called Film UK.
To subscribe to or follow other peoples lists you simply click on the LISTS tab on someone else’s profile select the list you want to subscribe to and click SUBSCRIBE.
Always check out who has put you on their lists, it’s a great way to engage with people and you can repay the favour by putting them on one on your lists. They find your tweets interesting, so you may find theirs interesting too!
What kinds of things would you use lists for?
